from your experience can you tell me what would be appropriate when using
white / gold / silver umbrella? like how do I know which one is best for what protraits?
You will find a useful overview guide and some comparison shots with different umbrellas here - http://cameradojo.com/2007/09/03/using-an-umbrella/
There are 2 main types of umbrellas, bounce and shoot through. A bounce umbrella is one that you aim the light into and bounce back towards the subject and a shoot through umbrella is where the light is aimed at the subject through a translucent umbrella making the umbrella act like a large soft-box.
I think you are asking about the bounce type so basically the white will give the softest even spread of light, the silver will be more specular and less soft, the gold will be similar to the silver but give a warm tone effect.

Just do a test … each models skin tone is a little different so each umbrella will produce a different look .. it is up to you as the photographer to choose the right one.
I have all of them and after three test shots viewed on my 17 inch notebook screen, I know which one I will be using for the shoot

That's a good article that scotinthemist50 gave you. The only point I would make (which of course makes your decision harder) is that I do think shoot through umbrellas do fine for portraits, where the article likes the reflector type umbrellas
